We are proud to share that Phạm Đoan Trang, imprisoned Vietnamese author, journalist, and co-founder of Legal Initiatives for Vietnam, has received the 2025 Tucholsky Prize, awarded by the Board of PEN Sweden.
PEN Sweden’s motivation for the award stated:
“The writer and publicist Phạm Đoan Trang is awarded the 2025 Tucholsky Prize for her dedicated writing and her tireless fight for freedom of expression and democracy in Vietnam.”
The prize was presented by the Swedish Minister for Culture Parisa Liljestrand, on 15 November, the Day of the Imprisoned Writer, during a ceremony held at Bonniers Konsthall in Stockholm.
On behalf of Phạm Đoan Trang, the award was accepted by Tran Quynh Vi, Taiwan Office Director of Legal Initiatives for Vietnam, as well as a close friend and colleague of Trang.
About The Tucholsky Prize
Named for German writer Kurt Tucholsky – who fled Nazi Germany to Sweden in the 1930s – the Tucholsky Prize is given by PEN Sweden to a writer or publisher who faces persecution or has been forced into exile. Previous recipients include Salman Rushdie, Bei Dao, Nuruddin Farrah and Samar Yazbek.
